Update on Kaitlyn

So here is an update on Kaitlyn. As most of you know she had a doctors appointment this past Tuesday at Primary Children's Hospital. Her doctor is Heidi White and Kaitlyn seems to like her, so that is good. Here is what we found out. She has what is called Primary Vesicoureteral Reflux which is were the one-way "flap valve" that prevents urine from backing up into the kidney is not contracting and is allowing the urine to travel backwards into her right kidney which causes the infection. There are varying stages ranging from 1 being not bad to 5 being very bad. Kaitlyn is at a 2. There is an 80% chance that she will grow out of it and it will fix itself. She will have to take and antibiotic for a year. If she continues to get bladder, kidney or UTI's while taking this antibiotic then she will probably have to have surgery. If she doesn't then she will return to Primary's and have another test done to see if she has out grown her reflux. Wayne and I are so glad that she doesn't need to have surgery and that she has continued to do well. Thank you to everyone who has called to see how she is doing and who has kept her in their prayers.

Now I am going to vent a little... I was thoroughly disappointed at the service from the Urological department at Primary's. Now I will admit that we were 10 min late to her appointment from circumstances out of my control, but I have never been treated with such rudeness in my life. When we checked in I apologized about being late and the girl said "well half your appointment is over. I will see if we can squeeze you in ( I wasn't aware that the visits were only 10 minutes long seeing how half my appointment was over)." I apologized again an mentioned that I was coming from Cedar City...4 hours away. Then I turned around to see that there was only one other person in the waiting room and they walked in after us. When they called Kaitlyn's name the nurse was very nice and I thought maybe this won't be so bad after all. When Dr. White came in and started asking about Kaitlyn's history I told her very thing that has happened in the last three weeks. She seemed satisfied until I couldn't answer one question ( which to my defense had no clue that I was even suppose to be watching for). She looked at me and started talking to me like I was some terrible parent who wasn't doing everything I was suppose to be. In short she made me feel like I was the dirt under her shoe. She continued on to explain Kaitlyn's reflux and what her plan was to solve the problem. I brought my mom so she could help me and explain things to me since Wayne wasn't able to come. My mom asked her what they were going to do with the infection Kaitlyn already has. Dr. White turned to me folded her arms and cocked her head to the side and said "How do you know she has an infection?" I told her that I didn't, but that she has had a steady low grade fever and continuing pain even with the antibiotic she has been taking. I also told her that she had a culture done and that I hadn't heard anything on it yet. She decided have Kaitlyn do another urine sample just in case. When she came back she said that there was something in it but she wasn't convinced that it was turning into an infection yet and that I needed to take it to the lab to be cultured. If there is anything then I will hear from her in two days.
I felt that our visit was rushed even though every room in the office was empty ( I know this because we were put in the last room and the doors to all the other rooms were open). Dr. White at times talked to me in a very condescending way. The office staff was rude upon my arrival even after apologizing twice. I think Primary's is a wonderful hospital and they save lives everyday, but the Urological Department needs a lesson on bedside manner and I am not looking forward to having to meet with them again.
